ch, ch, changes in October to laws to taxes

Equality Act 2010

Provisions to make it easier for business to comply with discrimination law will be introduced from October. The Equality Act brings together nine separate pieces of legislation into one single Act simplifying the law and reducing the burden on business by making it easier for firms to comply with discrimination law.

The Act brings disability, sex, race and other grounds of discrimination within one piece of legislation and also makes changes to the law. The Act does not apply to Northern Ireland.

New Minimum Wage Rate

National Minimum Wage rates are to rise from October 2010, with the minimum rate for workers aged 21 and over rising to £5.93 an hour. And for the first time a minimum wage rate for apprentices has been set.

From October 2010, National Minimum Wage rates will increase from:

£5.80 to £5.93 an hour for workers aged 21 and over
£4.83 to £4.92 an hour for workers aged 18 to 20
£3.57 to £3.64 an hour for workers aged 16 to 17

Fuel Duty Increase on October 1

The Labour government replaced its plans to impose a 3 pence per litre  fuel duty hike in April but  instead, adopted a staggered approach.

The second of three planned fuel duty rises during 2010/11 came into effect on 1 October, adding another £125 million per year to industry’s transport bill.   The Freight Transport Association warns that this could put many struggling companies on the ropes.  The price of diesel at the pump has seen an annual rise of 8.6 per cent, to 101.11 ppl, whereas inflation in the 12 months to August 2010 was 3.1 per cent (Consumer Prices Index).
