Nick Clegg announces 3000% increase in tax investigations

It was recently reported on the front page of the Daily Mail that “Tens of thousands will face intrusive new tax investigations under plans unveiled by the Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg.”

The article went on to say that the government “will pursue a £900 million drive that will see the number of people targeted for tax checks rise from 5000 to 150,000. Half of all people paying the 50p top rate of tax will have their tax affairs raked over by a dedicated team of investigators………..”

The Deputy PM has vowed to bring in intrusive new tax investigations, also suggested avoiding tax in such straitened times was immoral.

Steven Mugglestone, Director of the Birmingham office of Midlands Accountants and Business Advisors, McGregors Corporate commented, “It has never been more important to make sure that our clients are protected from the cost of tax investigations and to ensure that the most comprehensive cover and support is in place for them. We provide an insurance policy to cover the cost of these types of investigations, but I have also been acting for clients for over 20 years and myself and my team have represented them during either the investigations or tax hearings and to date, thankfully, we have been successful with all of those cases.  The insurance policies are important, but more importantly is having a good accountant and the correct advice.”
